Deep Dive to Answer Global Questions
Each class has started this term with an exciting new enquiry question from which to base their Global learning. Each class has their question displayed in their classroom and they are keen to find the answers, however, this will take a whole term of enquiry work for the children and the classroom discussions that have been taking place are second to none.
In Year 6 the children have been debating about whether the statues and memorials of those involved in the slave trade should be removed from our towns and cities. In Year 5 the children have been discussing the value of National Parks as this will lead to some probing questions about the future of Antarctica. Their enquiry question is Who Owns the Polar Regions? It is also exciting to note the fabulous cross-curricular links in Outdoor Learning, English and many other subjects which enhances the pupil’s knowledge, for example, in Year 6 the children have been studying the question, Are All People Free? Part of their outdoor learning lessons have included building the ships that were used in the Mid-Atlantic Slave Trade. Meanwhile in English they are reading a book called Black and British by historian David Olusoga, who explores this theme in depth. The library is full of books that relate to the enquiry questions being studied in Global and the interest in these books in astounding. Mrs Deale is making every effort to ensure enough copies of these books are in the Prep School library to feed the reading appetites of the children. Studies of important cultural events have taken place in assemblies with a recent assembly on World Religion Day, in which the six major religions of the world were explored and celebrated. Many children expressed their delight at having their religions mentioned in the assembly.
