Language Takes Us Around the World in One Day
Last Friday saw our vibrant and popular Language Day, where pupils had the opportunity to immerse themselves in the rich tapestry of global cultures. The children arrived dressed in the colours and outfits representing their chosen countries, setting the stage for a day filled with exciting activities.
Throughout the day, the children participated in a carousel of activities designed to broaden their linguistic and cultural horizons. These activities included:
- Story-telling in another language: Pupils listened to captivating stories told in various languages, to fire up their imagination and curiosity.
- Bingo in different languages: A fun and interactive way to learn new words and phrases.
- Memory games: Children tested their memory by recalling how to say different words in various languages.
- Food tasting: A culinary journey where pupils sampled delicious foods from different cultures.
- Role-play in a shop: Practicing language skills in a simulated shopping experience.
- Flag art: Drawing to learn about flags from around the world.
- Learning a dance: One of the highlights of the day, where pupils enjoyed learning traditional dances from different cultures.
The children were organized into vertical teams, allowing them to interact and collaborate with peers from other year groups, promoting community and teamwork skills as they moved through the activities together.
In addition to the in-person activities, some children explored languages online, choosing to learn new languages at their own pace. Notably, a few pupils took on the challenge of learning Arabic, discovering new words and phrases in this beautiful and complex language.
The children also learned songs in French, which they performed during their assembly, adding a music note to the day’s celebrations.
Years 3-6 children were treated to an incredible assembly from Sixth Form pupils about their trip to Tanzania to visit our partner school Lerang’wa over the summer. They shared videos of their experiences, including teaching the children and learning some Swahili.
Language Day was a resounding success, filled with laughter, learning, and a deeper appreciation for the world’s diverse cultures. It was a day that not only broadened everyone’s linguistic skills but also their understanding and respect for different cultures.
