Year 5 vs Year 6 Debating
There were two competitions in Debating Society this week to decide which teams would go through to the Grand Final of the Year 5 v Year 6 contest. First up were Year 5 who were debating which sport was the best spectator sport. It was clear that all teams had researched their arguments carefully and they had all worked very hard to include persuasive language techniques. It has been wonderful to see how far all members have come with their public speaking skills. Mia, Xander and Henry were the runners-up with their speech about the merits of watching cricket, but the winning team was the ‘rugby’ team of Gruff and Archie who won both the Audience and Judge’s votes. Year 6 were debating which ancient civilisation was the most advanced. Again, excellent research skills were in evidence and all teams worked hard to present their cases clearly and persuasively. The Audience vote was won by Shri and Ishani, who spoke about the Ancient Greeks. The runners-up were Ben K, Amaya and Beth with ‘Ancient Romans’ as their topic and the Judge’s vote went to Oliver, Ben D and Alex W for their well-constructed speech proposing that the Mayans were in fact the most advanced ancient civilisation. The two winning teams now progress to the Year 5 v Year 6 end of term debate – motion to be announced very soon….!
