Concert at St John’s Waterloo
Thursday 23 November, 7.00pm
St John’s, Waterloo
Autumn 2023 sees the return of the music department’s presence in central London in a magnificent concert that features the best of our choral and orchestral ensembles as well as some of our outstanding soloists. St John’s Church is a beautiful venue for such an occasion. Built in 1822-24 in the Greek-Anglican style, the church provides an impressive acoustic for our talented musicians and singers representing both Caterham Prep and Senior Schools. Our concert adds to the outstanding series of events held at St John’s.
The concert will feature a choral programme based around the theme of ‘Light’- a stimulus that has long been explored by composers of all backgrounds and styles. Chamber Choir and ETS will perform a selection of ethereal motets to include: ‘Northern Lights’ (a stunning piece inspired by the aurora borealis) by Norwegian composer Ola Gjeilo and ‘O Radiant Dawn’ by Scottish composer James McMillan. The choirs will combine alongside Caterham School’s Film Orchestra to perform Bob Chilcott’s uplifting ‘Canticles of Light’- a subtle yet dramatic setting of hymns from the Liturgia Horarum that explore darkness and light across three movements. A visit and masterclass from the composer himself, days before our concert will further inspire our singers and musicians.
The instrumental programme featuring Caterham School’s Sinfonia as well as our soloists, explores some compositional heavyweights – from the subtle yet complex majesty of Haydn’s ‘London’ Symphony (104) to the beauty and grace of Tchaikovsky’s ‘Romeo and Juliet’ Overture, the programme is sure to have something for everyone to enjoy in a stunning and inspiring setting.
The whole school community and beyond are warmly invited. Tickets are not required.
