Assembly Focus on Global Question
In a recent assembly led by Mr Jones, pupils reflected on the thought-provoking question ‘Are all people free?’ This coincided with the International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade, observed on 25 March.
Year 6 have been exploring this powerful enquiry question in class, looking into the history of the Transatlantic Slave Trade and examining other ways in which people continue to experience a lack of freedom today. These include modern-day slavery and even the invisible constraints of financial debt and other such burdens.
Mr Jones was deeply impressed by the maturity and insight shown by the Year 6 pupils whose thoughtful answers demonstrated a strong understanding of the topic. Mr Jones mentioned important figures such as Abraham Lincoln and William Wilberforce, drawing a meaningful connection to Wilberforce’s legacy as a founding member of our school.
The assembly was attended by Year 5 and Year 6 pupils. While Year 6 have already begun grappling with this important philosophical question, Year 5 will begin exploring it in depth as part of their Global learning next year.
