Breakfast Club – Batfink Makes a Surprise Visit
The Reception children have been reading the book ‘Batfink’ this week. As a surprise ‘Batfink’ decided to pay a visit to Pre-Prep on Wednesday morning. Everyone was very excited! When we took a closer look at the bat, we realised it was a Brown Long-Eared Bat. Its signature characteristic is its big ears which are almost as long as its body. When resting, it rolls its ears back or hides them underneath its wings. It is a medium-sized bat, growing to around 8cm in length, including ears. It has light grey-brown fur and a pale underside. We did wonder why ‘Batfink’ was visiting us as it is meant to be hibernating until April! Thank you ‘Batfink’ for visiting us, it was a great learning experience but we were happy to see you collected by a member of the Bat Conservation Trust to be returned safely to our woodland. Have a good sleep and we hope to see you again in spring!
