Everyday Maths in the Kitchen

Everyday Maths in the Kitchen

Year 6 have been learning about ratio and proportion in their maths lessons recently and looking at how these fits into our every day lives. One aspect we delved into was how it can be used within cooking – taking a recipe for a set number of people, but then altering the amount of each ingredient whilst keeping the proportions the same, so that it served a chosen number. For example, if they had a pancake recipe that served 4 people, they would need to work out how much of each ingredient was needed to serve 10 people. Children were set an optional task to go home and put the work they had done in school, into practice at home and make one of their recipes…with parents help of course. Does maths fit into our every day lives…a resounding yes!
