How Can AI Help and the Importance of Responsible Use
As part of our Digital Innovation curriculum this term, pupils in Years 3 to 6 have been exploring the fascinating world of Artificial Intelligence (AI). The unit, titled “How Can AI Help Us?”, guides pupils in identifying what AI is, how it learns, and how it can assist in learning and everyday life. We also tackle the important issues of potential problems and dangers that can arise from AI, such as cheating, bias, and other ethical matters.
At the halfway point of the unit, the children are gaining a comprehensive understanding of AI and its implications. Over the next few weeks, they will have opportunities to interact with some AI tools, under supervision and within age restrictions. This will allow them to directly observe the strengths, weaknesses, and issues of AI, further solidifying their understanding.
To supplement our in-class teaching, we’re sharing a video about AI with the children, which can be viewed here. This video concisely outlines the role of AI in our lives, how it operates through machine learning, and the importance of addressing potential flaws and biases in AI systems, as well as the need for diverse and inclusive AI training data sets and a diverse workforce in AI development to ensure fair and equitable outcomes.
By equipping our children with knowledge about AI’s power, possibilities and challenges and advocating for responsible and inclusive AI development, we aim to prepare them for a future in which AI will play an ever more significant role. This unit is another step towards our commitment to providing every pupil with a relevant and cutting-edge education that will prepare them for life in the 21st Century.
