Year 5 Pupils Delve into the Future of Education at Century Tech
This week, a group of Year 5 pupils had the unique opportunity to attend an inspiring workshop focusing on the role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in education. The day began with a captivating speech from Priya Lakhani OBE, founder and CEO of Century Tech, who provided a comprehensive explanation of how AI works, from Clubcards to Netflix recommendations. She also talked about emerging AI such as ChatGPT and its potential impact on the learning experience.
Following the speech, our young learners broke into debate teams, tasked with researching the advantages and disadvantages of AI in education. They reviewed news stories and a variety of resources around AI and AI-powered tools like ChatGPT, to gather information from a variety of viewpoints. Once armed with knowledge, they participated in a debate to determine the place of AI in the global educational landscape.
To conclude the workshop, the team identified key questions about essential issues related to AI that were raised by the children. These insights will be showcased to headteachers and policy makers alongside accompanying images at the upcoming IAPS AI conference, emphasising the importance of involving our future leaders in conversations around the development and implementation of technology in education.
As we prepare for our own units on AI in education for Years 3-6 over the coming weeks, it is great to see what intelligent and thoughtful attitudes they are already able to bring to the discussion.
