MFL
Our goal for Modern Foreign Languages (MFL) is to promote enjoyment, curiosity, and enthusiasm for learning modern languages. By equipping pupils with the skills to learn a new language, we open a whole new world of exploration, global connections, and a deeper understanding of our own language and culture. This also creates opportunities to learn and appreciate other languages, fostering a broader global perspective.
We celebrate the linguistic diversity within our school community, where many children speak or have exposure to other languages. This is highlighted during Language Day assemblies and through our language platform, which allows children to engage with their chosen language and share their linguistic experiences.
Our curriculum is cross-curricular, addressing important topics such as religious and cultural events, which are integrated into language learning. These connections directly align with the global topics explored across the school, enriching pupils’ understanding of the world and promoting cultural awareness and respect.
Children in Year 6 complete a short course in Mandarin, exposing them to languages from across the world. In their language learning, children are not only taught how to speak, write, learn, and listen, but they are also taught about the culture associated with the language, providing a deeper and more holistic understanding of global communities.
