Science
Science is all about discovery and developing our critical thinking skills! At Caterham Prep we engage, excite and empower our inquisitive young scientists, from using prior experience to make predictions, to testing theories using hands-on practical experiments. Lessons are based in our purpose built, fully equipped lab and we use research, discussion and debate to hone key ideas to develop our knowledge and skills. These scientific cornerstones grow with the children in depth and diversity from general science into biology, chemistry, physics and beyond into all STEAM subjects. STEAM Education is an approach to learning that uses Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts and Mathematics as access points for guiding pupil inquiry, dialogue, and critical thinking
Being part of a through school, we are lucky to have regular touchpoints with our senior school – from visiting for exciting extension sessions in the senior labs under the tutelage of our senior teaching team to inspiring talks, competitions and volunteer visits from GCSE and A Level pupils in our own prep lab. Visitors and speakers include pupils from esteemed senior school societies such as; the Wright Society for aspiring medics, dentists and vets, the prestigious Moncrieff Jones Science Society and The Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme. Our curriculum topics throughout the Prep School dovetail directly into the Senior School’s science suite through to GCSE, A Level and beyond, to offer depth, detail, stretch and application of concept opportunities with a no-ceiling approach to questioning from our pupils.
